Smarter Software Helps Protect Immigrants’ Rights

Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition provides free legal and social services to immigrant children and adults throughout the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas who are detained and facing deportation.

To better support CAIR Coalition’s mission of standing alongside people trapped in the fundamentally unjust immigration system, the organization recently adopted LegalServer as their case management solution - and the results have been transformative.

LegalServer’s robust features have brought more efficiency, better data tracking, and vastly improved reporting capabilities to our team.

CAIR Coalition migrated to LegalServer from Salesforce, which wasn’t meeting their unique data collection and reporting needs, according to Deputy Program Director, Detained Children’s Program, Sugeily Fernandez. “Salesforce housed data in separate tables that couldn’t always be pulled into one report,” Fernandez says. “As a result, team members often kept separate spreadsheets for auditing and tracking purposes.”

Fernandez notes that Salesforce, while having a lot of capabilities, isn’t legally-oriented, and lacks integral functionality for attorneys like time tracking and conflict searching. CAIR Coalition also struggled to monitor grant spend down and reconciliation with their old system, forcing them to use multiple 3rd party tools to fill in the gaps.

In contrast, LegalServer’s configurable suite - purpose built for legal aid - has consolidated everything into a single tailored platform.

When requirements inevitably change, CAIR Coalition administrators can quickly and easily make site and reporting changes in LegalServer’s “no-code” environment. “Since the migration, there have been numerous instances where we can run audits directly from LegalServer rather than using spreadsheets and other mechanisms,” Fernandez explains. “This, in turn, has continued to build buy-in across the team and improved data integrity given all the functionalities LegalServer provides.”
