API Integrations with Case Management Software

Integrating with external systems is a critical function for modern case management systems. When platforms can seamlessly communicate, end users are able to get more done with less manual work.

With its robust API framework, LegalServer’s open platform is leveraged every day by organizations like Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) to drive important decisions and serve clients better.

Founded by the Microsoft Corporation and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, KIND is the leading national organization advocating for the rights of unaccompanied migrant and refugee children in the U.S. Leveraging LegalServer’s automations since 2015, KIND has expanded their services to develop a holistic strategy for addressing the needs of children and the systemic causes of forced migration.

Integrations Galore

Naturally, KIND wanted to integrate multiple Microsoft tools with their tailored case management solution. The LegalServer Reports API provides important data to Power BI for data visualizations - greatly reducing requests for the same major data points over and over.

The LegalServer Reports API makes it extremely easy to pull data into Power BI. It takes less than 5 minutes and zero coding to establish the connection.

LegalServer also plays well with team collaboration software. Using the LegalServer Reports API and Power BI, KIND can quickly embed LegalServer reports directly into Microsoft Teams, where all staff meet, chat, and collaborate.

For example, the KIND Development Team now has a tab in their Team that displays:

  • Up-to-date information on the current number of clients per office,
  • Referrals,
  • Clients in ORR custody,
  • Clients impacted by the family separation policy,
  • Clients served by social services,
  • Number and type of legal trainings provided,
  • Attorney attendees to trainings, and
  • Number of active pro bono attorney partners per office.

Bringing Data to the Forefront

Staff can quickly view this data when talking to a funder, preparing for a presentation, or creating a campaign. “Leveraging LegalServer’s Reports API, KIND can create professional, colorful, exciting data visualizations that we are proud to include in reports to our Board of Directors, for example,” says Michelle Giezeman, Senior Director of Data Strategy at KIND. “It encourages more interaction with and exploration of our data.”

Making data more readily accessible also saves time for KIND’s Data Team. Through Power BI Service, they can schedule the report to automatically refresh from the LegalServer Reports API every day. That way, staff can access up-to-date data in Teams without having to contact the Data Team.

Attorneys and support staff are constantly entering and tracking information in LegalServer. By using the Reports API, we open up this rich data to all staff and enable it to be used in many different ways to further our mission.
